Short Classes:

Music Theory, Rhythmic Studies, Ear Training, and Instrumental Intensives

Beginning in the Summer of 2026, 8-week structured classes will be offered throughout the calendar year, focused on building strong musical foundations through applied music theory, rhythmic studies, and aural skills for all instruments including voice.

Summer Instrumental Intensives: Jazz and Concert Band

Designed for anyone at the beginner through intermediate level, this course offers a hands-on experience for musicians who wish to play their best within a high school or community ensemble. All instruments are welcome, from brass, to winds, reeds, and percussion. Together, we’ll build a sound foundation in the basics of your instrument and musical concepts in a fun and engaging environment.

Musicians will work in sections as well as in a group, giving you the skills that will inspire you for the coming years and beyond. Classes are guided by Daniel Pennell, bachelor of music from the University of North Texas (UNT), musical concepts championed through both Con Brio Music Festivals and the West Vancouver Youth Band.

Rhythm and Ear Training

All performance comes through voice, whether you are singing or playing an instrument; if you can hear it, you likely can play it. This is where it is essential to develop a stronger musical ear, and how it relates to timing, pitch, your instrument, and basic notation.

Expand your musical understanding through guided listening exercises that improve musical awareness and confidence.

  • Pitch, interval, and chord recognition

  • Rhythm identification, timing, and coordination.

  • Basic harmonic motion (chord progressions)

  • Memory and retention development

Basic Music Theory

Designed for beginners, this class aims to help musicians understand how you can improve the fluency and speed of your melody and chord recognition during practice and in real playing situations. Together, we'll cover a range of topics in a clear and relatable way, with direct application to your instrument.

Over the course of 8 weeks, you will build a sound foundation in the basics of rhythm, reading and writing notation, scales, chords, arpeggios, melodic/harmonic motion, and musical form. Classes align with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Syllabus milestones, RCM Theory material, and international methods and standards taught through the University of North Texas (UNT).
